Summer Camps

At Hickory Hill, we believe that the best way to learn is by doing! This summer we are offering farm camps for children ages 6-12. Our homestead art and science lessons are designed to give plenty of opportunity for hands-on learning.  Classes will meet one day a week for eight weeks. Choose from Tuesday or Thursday classes for the months of June and July with the exception of the week of July 1-5.  Topics are listed below and campers will have the opportunity to interact with each type of animal that we are studying.  On the last day of camp, we will have a family picnic and children will have the chance to show off all that they have learned.

What makes a duck float?  Come and snuggle fuzzy ducklings as we learn about buoyancy and what ducks need to thrive.  We will build boats and test our builds on the pond!  Our afternoon will be spent playing with water and creating water color paintings.

Why does soap bubble?  Try your hand at milking on our mini goats and then help us turn milk into soap!  We will build and test rockets as we study chemical reactions.  Each camper will get to create a custom bar of goat milk soap, choosing their own combination of scent and color.

How does the chick get out of the egg?  Candle eggs with us to see which eggs are fertile and then watch the incubation process (this will be done over several weeks).  Watch how the chick uses its egg tooth to get out of its egg.  We will learn how to keep chickens healthy, gather eggs and create decoupage eggs to take home.

Do all cows make milk?  Meet our mama cow and her calf as we learn about which type of cows make the best milk.  Help feed our calves and watch how milking works.  We will make and taste cheese. We will also paint and assemble wooden farm signs.

How do bees make honey? We will hike through the woods and the gardens to identify which bees make honey and which are only pollinators. Children will be introduced to gear that a beekeeper uses and the parts of the hive. We will build mason bee homes and learn about the different jobs that bees have in a hive.

Do rabbits only eat carrots?  Help us tend the rabbits and enjoy baby bunny snuggles.  We will learn all about the care and keeping of rabbits as we make rabbit treats and build bunny tunnels to see what our rabbits prefer. Each child will paint a ceramic farm animal of their choosing.

What is inside of seeds?  We will examine seeds and the seed germination process. Learning what is needed for a healthy garden, campers will get the chance to plant, grow and harvest from our garden.  We will pick and press flowers for our art project.

What do humans need to thrive? After studying all of those creatures, let’s examine what you and I need.  We will build shelters, learn about water purification, and build fires.  Taking turns with our bows we will see which of us would make good hunters. On this the final day of camp, we invite parents to picnic with us and explore the farm, because what we need most is our family!

To maximize the hands-on experience for each child, class sizes will be limited. Reserve your spot by registering today!
